Living Dangerously: a night of crime

The smallest city in England, Wells in Somerset, experienced an unusual evening of intrigue last week, when MMM’s own crime-thriller author Frank Westworth came to town. Frank was the special guest at Wells Library, where fans of crime fiction were given a sneak-preview of his brand new thriller, ‘The Redemption Of Charm’. Described as ‘a skilled veteran of the genre,’ Frank’s new novel is ‘a fine contribution that sets the bar for his peers.’

Over 90 minutes Frank revealed some of the secrets of his craft, the background to his morally complex, three-dimensional characters, and what it’s like to live with an ice-cold assassin running around in your imagination…

In a lively discussion with the audience, topics ranged from the rise of Nordic noir, Eurocrime and hard-hitting American TV crime-drama, to the perils of giving characters a religious background. Frank also explained why his charismatic anti-hero favours Harley-Davidson motorcycles and VW Transporter vans to hide in plain sight; much to the amusement of the fella who’d driven to the event … in a VW van. The audience was also entertained by snippets from Westworth’s own eventful back-catalogue – not least the revelation that he played lead guitar on a #1 pop song!

‘Frank’s talk was exceedingly interesting,’ said Martin, who’d travelled down from Bristol especially for the evening. ‘He’s a seriously passionate writer and an excellent speaker. A great evening.’
